Show off timber with a soft satin finish

Tikkurila Unica Super 20 is a solvent-based urethane alkyd lacquer, commonly described as a wood varnish, for suitable interior and exterior wooden surfaces. Its semi-matt appearance highlights timber without the strong reflection of a high-gloss finish.

Refresh a favourite wooden table while keeping its grain visible, or bring warmth to carefully prepared exterior timber. Clear and suitable translucent tinted finishes allow the wood itself to remain part of the design.

Key features

  • Semi-matt sheen: a restrained satin appearance for suitable timber.
  • Interior and exterior use: follow the complete coating specification for the exposure.
  • Urethane alkyd formulation: solvent-based, single-pack lacquer.
  • Clear or translucent colour: tintable in suitable Tikkurila translucent shades.
  • UV-protective agent: designed to slow sunlight-related yellowing, not prevent every colour change. The manufacturer states that tinted product provides better sunlight protection than untinted lacquer.

Suitable projects

Manufacturer technical guidance includes wooden furniture, floors subject to light mechanical and chemical stress, and boats above the waterline. Confirm suitability for the timber, previous finish and intended service conditions.

Do not assume suitability for submerged surfaces, constant immersion, every commercial floor or every existing coating. Exterior use also requires the recommended preparation, priming and maintenance.

Preparation and priming

Begin with sound, clean and dry timber. Remove contamination and loose or failing lacquer, sand and remove dust as directed in the current technical data sheet. Check compatibility with the previous coating before recoating.

The technical guidance specifies a priming treatment for weather-exposed exterior timber and a Unica Super 90 priming-lacquer stage for new surfaces. Use the current complete system instructions rather than assuming Unica Super 20 alone replaces every preparation and priming stage.

Stir thoroughly before use and occasionally during application. Follow the manufacturer's tools, permitted thinning, coat build and sanding requirements. Plan exterior work around suitable weather and allow adequate drying before dew or rain.

Coverage, drying and curing

  • Theoretical coverage: 8–10m² per litre; actual coverage varies with timber, application and film build.
  • Application: brush or suitable spray equipment following the technical guidance.
  • Dry to handle: from approximately 6 hours under the technical sheet's stated conditions.
  • Recoating: the UK product page lists approximately 24 hours. Follow the current technical sheet and actual drying conditions.
  • Final hardness and durability: approximately 4 weeks according to the technical sheet, depending on conditions.

Handling and recoating readiness are not full curing. Protect the finish from heavy use and cleaning while it hardens. Temperature, humidity, ventilation and coat thickness affect drying. Follow the safety data sheet for ventilation, solvent handling, protective measures and ignition precautions.

Pack and colour information

This listing offers options labelled 1L and 3L. The manufacturer's technical sheet lists 0.9L and 2.7L base packs, and the genuine photograph shows a 0.9L tin. Confirm the actual supplied fill and tinting base with Bespoke Decor NI if volume is critical. The existing option labels have not been changed.

Confirm whether you require clear or a suitable translucent shade. Make a trial application on the intended timber: species, existing colour, preparation and coat build influence the finished appearance.

Frequently asked questions

Is Unica Super 20 water-based?

No. It is a solvent-based urethane alkyd lacquer. Follow the current thinning, cleaning and safety instructions.

Is it an opaque wood paint?

No. It is a clear or translucent finish intended to leave the wood character visible. Test the chosen finish on the actual timber.

Can I use it outside?

Yes, on suitable exterior wood within the specified preparation and coating system. It is not a maintenance-free treatment.

Can I use it on floors?

The manufacturer lists floors under light mechanical and chemical stress. Confirm suitability for the expected traffic and allow the prescribed curing time before normal use.

Can it be used below a boat's waterline?

The listed boat application is above the waterline. Do not assume suitability for immersion.

Will UV protection stop all yellowing?

No. The agent slows sunlight-related effects; it is not a guarantee against every colour change. Tinted product offers better sunlight protection than untinted product according to the manufacturer.

Are the timber scenes actual Unica applications?

No. The dining-table and exterior-seating scenes are AI-generated illustrative inspiration, not exact tinted shades, verified Unica Super 20 applications or protection demonstrations.
